Many have asked whether AI image generators will eliminate the stock image industry. the traditional view, however, is that “no,” AI-generated content are often marketed before the technology does.

Stock image giant Shutterstock announced an extended partnership with OpenAI, which can see the AI lab’s text-to-image model DALL-E 2 directly integrated into Shutterstock “in the coming months.”

Additionally , Shutterstock is launching a “Contributor Fund” which will reimburse creators when the company sells work to train text-to-image AI models.

This follows widespread criticism from artists whose output has been scraped from the online without their consent to create these systems. Notably, Shutterstock is additionally banning the sale of AI-generated art on its site that is not produced using its DALL-E integration.

Shutterstock and OpenAI have collaborated before during this domain. From 2021 onwards, Shutterstock sold images and metadata to OpenAI to assist create DALL-E (Altman says that “this data is critical to the training of DALL-E”).

Now that OpenAI’s text-to-image AI has been integrated, the partnership goes back around, and DALL-E will compete against the identical individuals whose work contributed to its training.

Altman claims that Shutterstock’s images are as important to the creation of DALL-E as Altman himself. this is often why the platform is also going to establish a Contributor Fund, which can pay out creators when their content is sold to firms like OpenAI to develop generative AI models.

The content, which is uploaded to the platform by creators, are going to be sold to these firms to create these models.

With this announcement, a platform holder is signaling its first major raid compensating creators in this way. However, it also highlights the thorny legal and ethical questions surrounding this new technology.

Shutterstock users are going to be paid when their content is used to train artificial intelligence models, consistent with this news release.
